Entrepreneurship Management

Learn to connect the right way.

In life and in business we will need to be aware of (1) whom we are marketing ourselves to, (2) what we are marketing, and (3) how we are marketing ourselves. Each of these three things can make a major difference in our journey for success.

People who understand these three components can

  • Set clear realistic expectations.
  • Reach their objectives.
  • Come up with creative solutions.
  • Network and connect the right way.

Market to the right people. You need to bring your ideas/service/product to the right market in order to succeed. If you put yourself in the right market, you will do exceptionally well. Knowing the power of social media, understand that people are watching you and that your posts/content are a reflection of who you are.

Start by writing and asking yourself the following: Who is my audience? Who do I want to attract? What are they interested in knowing?

If you are on a job search, you need to make sure you are marketing yourself  not only to the right people but also in the right area. You need to be where the action is. If you are not succeeding in one area, you should look elsewhere. You need to go to markets in which you are wanted and needed, and should not concentrate on any other markets. You need to go wherever the demand is. Look for the island where you are special!

Many people spend decades believing they are not capable or do not have the right skills; they do not make the most of themselves because they are trying to market themselves in the wrong area or to the wrong people. You need to market yourself to people who are interested in what you have to offer, and often this may mean changing locations geographically or searching for a group that you know will appreciate what you have to offer.

Use the right hook. To catch a fish, you will need a bait! But know that different fish are attracted to different bait. In the world of sales, we can’t sell what people don’t need. It’s either we create a need or keep asking the right questions until we identify the real interest. It’s only by presenting the right solution that we hook people and get their attention.

Remember, you have identified the right the market, now it’s easy to present the perfect hook. Let me give you a concrete example; If you are looking for a specific job position, you will need to find a way to present the job description in your CV, even if you have to rectify the previous job titles. The content of your résumé is the bait that you are offering. You need to tailor your bait to each type of employer and each type of job out there (without lying, of course). The better your bait, the better your odds of getting the right job.

Market Using More Than One Medium. When the major companies release a new product, they do everything within their power to make sure people know it is available:

  • They take out giant billboards.
  • They take out television ads.
  • They take out huge newspaper and magazine ads.
  • They put ads on the Internet and build huge websites about the movie.
  • They do radio ads.
  • The put banners on buses.
  • They put signs on bus stops.
  • They hire public relations firms to get stories about their brand in the media.
  • They hold screening parties.
  • They run trailers for the movie inside movie theaters.
  • They fly banners for the movie behind airplanes.
  • They sponsor sporting events.

In essence, they do everything within their power to let as many people know about the product as they possibly can, using as many communication media as possible. This is what you need to do when you are searching for a job or success as well.

“Let success know that you are serious about it!”

You need to market yourself in every possible medium.

To succeed in your job search (and in your life), you need to market yourself to the correct people in the correct places. You need to know how to package yourself to have the right bait, and you also need to use as many media as you can, in order to spread your message.
